Chief David Brown, reports crime in Dallas is down, way down, about 11.5%!
On October 1, 2012, I attended a Crime Prevention Leaders meeting at the home of our District 13 Council Member, Ann Margolin. Dallas Police Chief, David Brown, was the speaker. He gave us the following facts:
- Crime in Dallas is down for the 9th straight year -- 11.5% so far in 2012
- Crime in Dallas is down 57% since January 1, 2004
- There are 27 crime "hot spots" that are one-square mile each and have been tagged as "high crime areas." They represent 40% of the total crime in Dallas, but only 6% of the geographical area.
- 88% of crime in Dallas is property crime
- Dallas police arrest 50,000 criminals a year, but there are 6,000 jail beds
When asked what he attributed the reduction in crime to, he responded:
- NO SHRINKAGE. The Dallas City Council has always allowed police hiring to make up for attrition. With all the tough budgets, officer's positions have not been cut.
- Data to drive deployment. Strong use of FUSION center that incorporates information from 9-1-1 calls, which the Chief encourages all of us to make.
- Technology. Bait Car Program, other bait programs, cameras in public places, license readers (machines in squad cars to read license plates) etc.
The Chief described one successful program:
One successful program is to close down fencing operations. At the beginning of 2012 the Chief realized that if the monetary source for crooks dried up, then crime might be reduced. Many property crimes are misdemeanor crimes. Fencing is a felony. He challenged his officers to get 100 fencing operations within the year. So far in 2012, they have closed 75 operations.
NPNA Fall Membership Meeting is October 11, 1012 -- 7pm at Withers
Next NPNA board meeting November 8, 2012

Dallas Police Department (DPD) - Free Services!
| |
Services provided by the DPD at no cost to you are outlined below. Use these services! Your tax dollars ARE at work!
- Extra Patrol. If you are going to be gone from home for a period of time, call the Dallas Police Department at 214-670-6178 or dial 3-1-1, provide the dates you will be gone, and officers will drive by and check on your house. Specific Contact is NW officer, Perry Richardson, 214-670-6206
- Home Security and Insurance Reduction Survey. An officer from the Dallas Police Department trained to inspect your home for safety, security and insurance reduction will do the home inspection. The survey is designed to locate weaknesses in your home security and identify practical ways of correcting them. To set up your personal Home Security Inspection, call NW officer, Perry Richardson, 214-670-6206
- VIN Etching. It is very important that all the glass in your vehicle have the vehicle VIN number on it. Glass is very expensive and sells easily. It usually does not have any identifying mark. With the VIN number etched it will make the vehicle much less desirable to the thief, and it will make it much easier for the police to identify a single piece of glass. To have this done, you can organize a group of people that want the service or you can place your name on a list that will be done in the future. For complete details contact NW officer, Perry Richardson, 214-670-6206
- Leads on Line. Go to Leads Online to register your property. Identification is extremely important in completing criminal cases.

Up and Down the Creek
| |
Anyone who has walked or driven by the power lines that span the creek near Rosser and Sleepy Lane will have noticed the large wire cages - gabions - that will be filled with rock or concrete rubble and carefully placed along the banks to stop erosion.
Creek Committee member, Louise Smith, who has a view of this City of Dallas project from her property, reports that the contractor is doing a good job of keeping the site clean. These are welcome and long needed improvements to the creek and should be complete in about 4 months.
The recent rain restored some water flow to the upper stretch of the creek, and perhaps rekindled the interests of the Beavers -- they're back, and their chiseling work is evident on several good sized trees just north of Alta Vista. Long time residents know that the beavers visit and revisit Joe's Creek, and at least once remained long enough to establish a dam, raise the water level, and a baby beaver was sighted.
Recent experience shows that dry conditions can easily return. Keep in mind, the less water naturally, the more effect any contaminants, including pool discharge or pesticides, will have in the creek.
Finally mosquitoes -- are we still seeing them? Well, the ones that you don't see could do a lot of damage, so continue to take precautions.
From the creek committee Co Chairs,
Vince Punaro & Rebecca Bergstresser

Garden News

The NPNA Beautification Committee held its first Plant Sale on September 15, 2012, in the Withers Elementary School garden under their beautiful pergola. Members of the Beautification Committee, plus several other NPNA neighbor members, dug plants from their gardens and donated them to our sale.
While the NPNA plant sale was being held, families from Withers Elementary were busy with the fall cleanup of their school garden. Our Beautification Committee members helped as they had time. This joint event was both fun and successful.
Our DISD School Board representative, Elizabeth Jones, attended this event and was impressed with the joint activity between NPNA and DISD.
Our NPNA motto: "Neighbors Helping Neighbors" was certainly appropriate for this joint event.
Thank you to all the volunteers.
Kiki Paschall, NPNA VP Committees
