President's Letter
| |
Hello Neighbors!
As we enter September and the hint of the fall season teases us with a few cooler nights, NPNA reminds you of a couple of important items to NOT forget:
- The threat of West Nile virus still surrounds us. Please remember to remove all standing water in your yards, potted plants, and non-moving outdoor water fountains/attractions. A call last week from the neighborhood President just east of NPNA reported 2 new cases in their neighborhood. Protect yourself while outdoors.
- School IS IN SESSION! Remember: please use caution driving through the streets surrounding Withers Elementary, as well as all school zones through which you drive. I understand there is a new law that allows cameras to be attached to school buses to catch speeders, so please be aware of school zones (and put down that cell phone!).
- The Fall NPNA Membership meeting is set for October 11, 2012. You will NOT want to miss this year's presentation!! Look for a separate email and mail flyer in the coming couple of weeks announcing our guest speaker for this meeting. Also, NPNA will host the Fall Showcase again this year. To participate, please contact Linda Rogers @ ljgrogers@gmail.com or 214-766-0110.
- Several neighbors are reporting increased traffic on Royal, Forest, and Cox. Please be safe as we experience higher volumes as school gets back in session (and LBJ construction increases along with flaring tempers!).
I look forward to sharing more information about the upcoming NPNA Fall Meeting and other events in the next few weeks.
Julie Reeves NPNA President

Crime is down in everywhere-In the United States, in Dallas, in the Northwest Division and yes in our neighborhood. For the first time ever our police beat 554 had no reported crime from August 23-30, (8 days)
Recently in a Dallas Crime Watch task force meeting, Chief Golbeck said, crime was down because of multiple factors. A list will be sent out soon. One significant factor was CRIME WATCH GROUPS.
An emphasis is being placed on involving youth in Crime Watch. If you have or know of a youth that would be interested in serving in a youth capacity on the NPNA Crime Watch Committee please let me know.
This committee will have its annual meeting in September or October.
Let's Further REDUCE CRIME IN NPNA
- Practice LOCK-TAKE-HIDE
- Be observant: Call 9-1-1 and report all suspicious activity to police
- Display NO SOLICITING NO ADVERTISING signs and stickers
- Only open your door to people you know-always let the stranger know you are home
- Always set home alarm system
- Communicate with neighbors-You watch their property, they watch yours
- Leave front and back lights on at night
- Place locks on all outside gates
- Never respond to a telemarketer especially if it involves a "green dot credit card"
Did you notice the BAIT CAR SIGN at Marsh and Pallos Verdas??

Up and Down the Creek
| |
Mosquitoes -- they're still here -- despite the reduction from spraying-- perhaps "not near as many as there was a while ago," ... but do keep vigilant, keep wearing protective clothing and repellent, because mosquitoes will be in evidence until cold weather, really until it freezes, we might say until Joe's Creek freezes over.
In the upper reaches of Joe's Creek, conditions as dry as any in perhaps 25 or 30 years meant that for a few weeks in late July and early August, one could walk along the creek bed for several blocks without getting one's shoes wet. Creek committee members monitored the shrinking pools of water in the section between Alta Vista and Forest Lane, and placed mosquito dunks provisionally to prevent any growth of mosquitoes. Thanks to our Parks liaison, Jeremy McMahon, for his coordination & approval on behalf of the City of Dallas.
As rain brought the return of flowing water to the creek, pools refilled, and minnows were again in evidence. Also sighted in early September, in a shallow pool, numerous tadpoles, and at least one, not much bigger than a "BB", had made the hop to dry land on September 5th.
Be on the lookout for any of these Joe's Creek toads that may make their way into your yards - it is estimated that an adult toad might eat 25 mosquitoes every night! Hopefully this is evidence of the resilience of the creek, and the absence of too many pesticides.
We will hope to have a fall clean-up along the creek when the weather turn cooler, we are counting on that. Thanks again to our volunteers for your continuing interest.
From the creek committee Co Chairs,
Vince Punaro & Rebecca Bergstresser
