President's Letter

Hello Neighbors!

As we move into the month of May, NPNA continues to provide our neighborhood with events and activities. April was a very busy month, starting with our NPNA Spring Membership meeting on April 12th . Here are a few meeting highlights:

  • NPNA Bylaw changes were presented and approved by the Members at the meeting
  • Laura Frase was given the NPNA Spring "Extra Mile" Member for her contributions to the NPNA Board of Directors as we updated bylaws and created new policies for NPNA
  • The NPNA President's Award was given to Kiki Paschall for her leadership as NPNA VP - Committees and recruiting excellence for the committees she leads: Beautification, Creek, Social, and Welcome

The annual NPNA Spring Picnic was held this past Sunday and was a big success - hats off to the NPNA Social Committee for their efforts: Jen Griffin (Committee Chair), Mini Delashaw, Tracy Fulton , Kathy Lewis, Karen Herleman, Patrick Mowles, and Karen Stonecipher.

NPNA brings more activities and events to you on May 5th for the NPNA Backyard Garden Tour and a 'Movie-in-the-Park' night in June. Look for details on these events in our newsletter and email blasts.

Finally, this month NPNA launches a new website! In addition to the upgraded technology "look & feel", website improvements include:

  • Complete NPNA membership form online and pay using PayPal
  • Register/RSVP to NPNA events directly on the website
  • View NPNA Crime Reports, event pictures, history, and information

More functionality will be added to the website in the coming months!

Enjoy these last few cool mornings in May, and we will see you at an upcoming NPNA event soon!

Crime is unpredictable, that is the reason we should be aware at all times and in the case of suspicious activity call 9-1-1. The police are the ones who tell us this over and over!

As the police will tell you--alert neighbors helping each other is the best crime prevention possible.

Solicitors continue to be a problem: If you have a NO SOLICITING NO ADVERTISING sign that is ignored by a solicitor, call the police. Always speak to them through the door if they do not go away quickly, call 9-1-1 immediately. Stickers are free-Signs $6

CHIEF AZIZ spoke at the NPNA spring meeting-He then sent the following summary

HOW CAN WE ALL HELP TO REDUCE CRIME?

TOP 5 from Malik Aziz-Northwest Division, Deputy Chief

  • More engagement and growth in crime watches.
  • Leads Online: www.leadsonline.com; we need to engage in this crime prevention model. 88 percent of Dallas' crime is property crime. The vast number of stolen merchandise has not been logged.
  • Active Crime Prevention Programs: signs like Operation ID; Lock, Take and Hide
  • VIN Etching Programs: NW has a VIN Etching machine obtained with a grant from the Target Corporation
  • Bait Equipment  NW could use more bait equipment. It cost approximately $2,600 to equip a car. We also will accept any car for donation as long as it can be driven from point A to Point B.

Up (and down) the Creek May 2012

(from the NPNA Creek Committee)
Water - is the common link that we share with the wildlife in the creek, and ultimately with everyone. See the timely and well researched article in Thursday, May 03, 2012 Dallas Morning News, by Jaime Adame, "Are your pesticides in area creeks?" (page 6, Gardening or go to the DMN website. We would only add, one can ask the same question about pool or other household chemicals. Residue from anything on our yards or lawns can become part of storm water or irrigation runoff, all of which flows into the storm drains and then into the creek.
